Monique Burr Foundation For Children, Inc.
The Monique Burr Foundation for Children, Inc. is a nonprofit organization created in 1997 to honor the late Monique Burr, a tireless advocate for abused and abandoned children. Our mission is to make a positive impact on the community at large, to create change in a family’s life for the better, and to give hope in the life of a child by providing safety and child abuse prevention education that is relevant to issues facing children today, including all forms of abuse, neglect, bullying and internet safety.
We believe that all children should receive safety and child abuse prevention education. During the 2010-11 school year, more than 20,000 students in public and private elementary schools were trained and empowered to protect themselves through our safety and child abuse prevention education program called Speak Up Be Safe.
Speak Up Be Safe

Speak Up Be Safe is a comprehensive safety and child abuse prevention program that meets the requirements of Florida Statute 39 (including all forms of abuse, bullying, pornography and computer safety) and meets the requirements of the Florida Sunshine State Standards. Your donations are used to provide this prevention education at no cost to schools.

A safety and child abuse prevention program is most effective when it encompasses all social facets of a child’s life and all sectors of a community. Key concepts utilized by the Speak Up Be Safe program include:
- A school based program is in the unique position to reach most of the primary adults in a child’s life and the community at large.
- School personnel that go through prevention curriculum training gain understanding of how abuse affects child development; learn the disclosure process and mandatory reporting rules; foster nurturing behaviors in their classrooms; and are given tools that can be used in their lesson plans.
- Children who go through an abuse prevention program in particular show an increased awareness of safety issues and a greater knowledge of child abuse and neglect.
- Parents and caregivers are given access to community resources and organizations that can provide support services and teach non-violent responses to stress or conflict.
- The community at large benefits from an increase in public awareness of child safety and abuse issues.
It is our goal to provide the Speak Up Be Safe Program to every elementary school in Florida by 2015.
